Geography

The Kingdom of Cambodia is a country in South East Asia with a land area of 181,035 square kilometers. The neighboring countries are Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. The capital city is Phnom Penh.

Population

The country has a population of approximately 14 million people. Majority of the population are Khmer and the rest have mixed descent including Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian, Thai, and Tamil.

Language

The official language in Cambodia is Khmer. However, English is widely spoken and understood everywhere. French and Mandarin are also commonly spoken.

Weather

Cambodia generally has a hot climate throughout the year. The main seasons are the rainy season which lasts from May to October and the dry season which lasts from November to April. The coolest months are December and January. The hottest month is April. The average temperature is approximately 27-28 ºC.

Food

The local cuisine in Cambodia includes noodles, soups, grills, stir-fried, curries, salads, desserts, lots of vegetables, and tropical fruits. Similar to other Asian countries, rice is the staple food in Cambodia. Traditional recipes use a variety of local ingredients including cloves, cinnamon, star anise, nutmeg, cardamom, ginger and turmeric. Two unique ingredients found in Cambodian specialties are ‘pra-hok’ a fish paste and ‘kapi’ a fermented prawn paste.
